Journalist’s elderly parents were tortured and his home was bombed by Taliban Toronto, July 9, 2009 - The Pashtun Peace Forum (PPF) -Canada, The Pashtun Youth Organization Canada and the Pashtun community living in Canada condemn the senseless attack on the home of VOA’s Deewa Radio journalist Rahman Bunairee in Bunir which occurred in Pakistan on July 8. According to latest reports the attack has unnecessarily endangered Bunairee’s elderly and innocent family, which caused them torture and great loss. We know that Mr. Bunairee is a brave journalist who has committed his life to carrying out the torch of sharing independent news and information with Pashtuns, region and the free world. Bunairee’s house in Bunir was blown up in an explosion after masked militants entered the house and ordered his family to leave. The attackers destroyed his house. The intruders claimed they were ordered to destroy the house because Bunairee works for Deewa Radio, the popular VOA service that broadcasts in Pashto to the 70 million Pashtuns in Pakistan and Afghanistan border region. The Pashtun Peace Forum Canada asks the journalist community in Canada and around the world to raise their voice and to provide support to Mr. Bunairee’s family and other journalists who are informing the world about the brutalities of militants in Buner, Swat, Dir, Waziristan and the tribal agencies of Pakistan. We hope that all the journalists will continue to report the news, accurately and independently, for as long as press freedom is threatened in Pakistan and especially in Pashtun areas of Pakistan. We hope that this incidence will bring the miseries of over three million displaced Pashtuns to the attention of the journalist community, human rights organizations and governments and people of Canada and the free world.
