Press Conference on FATA

[17.Sep.2010 - 15:38]
Tribal NGOs Consortium Peshawar: Tribal NGOs Consortium (TNC) held a Press Conference in Peshawar Press Club today on FATA post flood situations and plights of the inhabitants of tribesmen, women and children. It was said that FATA which comprises of Seven Agencies and Six FRs is completely neglected and neither central government extends its help to its people and nor FATA Secretariat. It means it is a ghost house where its inmates are totally forgotten. When it rained last month, it badly hit the mountains of FATA where the soil was eroded, standing crops and trees uprooted, fields washed away, most of the cattle died and many people remained shelter less because the rain devastated each and every thing and many mud built houses were caved in. More than 200 people were killed but unfortunately the reports about FATA are not published and the area has been made as inaccessible for the free and independent media. For the last several years this forgotten region has been witnessing destructive and subversive activities which destroyed the politics, economy and social fabric of the society in FATA. Thousands of people left the area and migrated to some comparatively several areas of Pakhtunkhwa province where most of them are leading a miserable and forgotten life. People of FR Peshawar, FR Kohat and Khyber Agency are not considered as IDPs by the government , that,s why many people who fled from the threat of militancy are living either with relatives or in some makeshift houses which are not worthy to live. The education of the children also suffered and it is feared that many children will be deprived of the ornament of education. The future generation will be ignorant which will be a great loss to people of FATA and nation alike. The government has collected data of all affected areas but the report issued by NDMA fails to mention FATA among the affected areas. It is of great concern for us all. Billion of dollars were obtained on the heads of people in FATA but one will be astonished to see that FATA is still showing a picture of medieval age. The government and international donor agencies are appealed to come forward and help FATA people and the region. A multicluster rapid assessment mechanism should immediately be carried out for which our member organizations are prepared and on its basis a marshal plan should be devised for the development of FATA. All those who suffered in recently devastating flood in FATA should immediately be compensated and the reconstruction work be initiated on war footing. Tribal NGOs Consortium a representative network of all FATA based NGOs CBOs busy doing developmental and relief work for the people and area. The member organizations have also played an important role in pre and post flood era in FATA. The recent devastating flood has played havoc with children and especially women. Lactating and pregnant women suffered and are still suffering. As IDPs their condition is worst and as for as children both boys and girls are concerned their education institutions are closed who need schools to be educated. Those students who are not allowed to be got admitted in schools in settled areas should be permitted to get education. Special scholarships and stipends should be announced for students of FATA. Agriculture is the back bone of economy which was badly destroyed by the flood and has rendered people in FATA jobless and having no food to eat. A famine like situations is imminent in FATA as the standing crops, gardens, vegetable and cattle have been either washed away by gushing water or completely destroyed.
