Appeal for urgent support

[05.Aug.2010 - 12:40]
Appeal for urgent support to the flood affected families in Pakhtunkhwa Thursday, 05 August 2010 The un-precedent flooding has had a heavy toll on the lives, livelihoods and infrastructure in 22 districts of the Province. Over 1000 precious lives have been lost and many still unaccounted for. The number of people rendered shelter-less by the floods has risen to over 3 million people. Over 100 main roads and bridges have been washed away, electricity and telephone services cut off making access to the families stuck in remote areas a major challenge for the Government and relief organizations. Rushing water has washed away thousands of acres of crops, government buildings, businesses, schools, bridges and homes. Flood waters have destroyed much of the health infrastructure in the worst affected areas, leaving inhabitants especially vulnerable to water-borne diseases. Baacha Khan Markaz Peshawar Aug. 5, 2010 Appeal for urgent financial and in kind donation to the flood affected families in Pakhtunkhwa The people and government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa need your generous financial support to deal with the massive rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts in the flood affected areas. The un-precedent flooding has had a heavy toll on the lives, livelihoods and infrastructure in 22 districts of the Province. The devastating floods will have a severe impact on an already vulnerable population hit hard by the fight against terrorism. A state of emergency has been declared in the Province and the Provincial Government has diverted all its meager resources to deal with this huge humanitarian crisis. The rescued families are being provided temporary shelters in government schools, with basic facilities such as clean drinking water, cooked food and basic health care. Despite all out efforts by the Provincial Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the scale of the crisis is so immense that it needs urgent and immediate support from Federal and International Governments, Aid Agencies, relief Groups and Philanthropists. Please come forward and donate generously to the ongoing efforts. You can send your donations to the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa´s Relief Fund No. G-12138 or the Baacha Khan Education Foundation A/C No. 0181-374471000069 MCB Hayatabad 1448. Regards Asfandyar Wali Khan Central President, Awami National Party The un-precedent floods in Pakistan in general, and in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in particular, have affected millions of people with a devastating magnitude. Whole villages have been washed away with immense loss to lives and properties. Almost all the infrastructure has been partially or fully destroyed. Roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and other vital communication systems like telephone, mobile phone service grid stations and power supply lines have been destroyed. It will require years of efforts by the government to rebuild what is repairable, but immediately, people are living in relief camps without adequate facilities to survive. There are health and hygiene issues that are further aggravating the situation and threatening peoples´ lives. Malakand Division´s infrastructure of roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals have already sustained immense damage due to militancy in the area, but the current floods have especially hit Malakand Division and Swat which are one of the most sensitive areas in respect of Global War on Terror (GWOT) and need immediate attention by the the global community in order to avoid any further complications. Similarly, Charsadda, Nowshera, parts of Peshawar and D.I. Khan are other worst hit areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The scarce resources of the provincial government have already drained by diverting it towards security and law and order. Currently, there is not adequate forthcoming to help the people in distress. I, on behalf of the Awami National Party, appeal individuals within and outside Pakistan, as well as governments and organizations, to come forward and help the affected people. More rains are forecasted and the situation might get worst; therefore, immediate help in cash and kind is direly needed.
