Financial help sought for ailing progressive poet Murad Shinwari
By Sher Alam Shinwari Khyber Agency: Murad Shinwari a senior Pashto fictionist, progressive poet, critic and song writer has been suffering from heart disease and multiple health complications for the last several years. Kalim Shinwari general secretary of the Hamza Baba Adabi Jirga (HAJ) has demanded of the governor Khyber Pakhtnkhwa Owais Ahmed Ghani and President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari to extend financial support to the senior writer. Murad Shinwari, the only son of Baba-e-Pashto Ghazal Amir Hamza Khan Shinwari, is one of the pioneers for introducing new trends to the modern Pashto poem. He was born in 1928 at Landi Kotal (Khyber Agency). He received his early education from Govt. High School No.1, Peshawar and did his master’s in Pashto literature from Peshawar University as private candidate with gold medal. He has scripted dialogues, scenarios, and songs for more than hundred Pashto films, out of them, the hits Urbal, Bangree Au Hatkarrey, Juram Au Saza, Naaway Da Yawe Shpey, and Multan Khan Afridi. He has even directed and added music to some of these films. Murad Shinwari served as an Editor ´Afghan´ a representative newspaper of Pashtuns at that time. During the same time, he penned Palwashey a collection of short stories which unfortunately is not available in the market. It earned him a wide appreciation. He got employment in the Khyber Rifle´s as an instructor from where he was sent to Army School of Education in Murree. There, he received the necessary army training and passed all the education crops examinations with distinction and was awarded the degree of B.T by the University of Punjab. He joined Pashto Academy in 1958 as Librarian but he also worked as lexicographer and translator there, the atmosphere of the academy was more suitable for his literary mental make-up. He compiled an anthology of 41 important Pashto poets belonging to Khyber agency; the book Da Khyber Adab was published in 1958 contains critical commentary and a brief introduction of each poet. This was a major breakthrough in Pashto literary criticism. It received a huge applause from all the literary circles. Da Khyber Adab is still considered a historical document, which is more often, consulted by the research scholars. He wrote some memorable, features like Hujra, Maraka highlighting social evils for PBC, Peshawar which continued for many years. Murad Shinwari pioneered free verse a new literary genre in Pashto literature. He has contributed articles on different, social, political and literary issues to literary magazines and newspapers. After getting retirement from Radio Pakistan, Peshawar in 1989, the reputed poet is living a miserable life. Kalim Shinwari told this scribe that Murad Shinwari’s pension is so meager that he cannot afford medicines. He has recently handed over his poetry manuscript (Aeeyney) to an Afghan researcher Prof Asif Sameem for publication. Literary circles including Hamza Baba Jirga and Hamza Baba Adabi Society have sought financial assistance for the ailing poet.
