Speakers paid rich tributes to literary giant Qalandar Momand

By Sher Alam Shinwari Saturday, 10 October 2009 PESHAWAR: Speakers at a literary seminar arranged under the auspices of Pakistan Academy of Letters, (PAL) Peshawar chapter on the literary, political, and journalistic contributions of the renowned literary figure Qalandar Momand in collaboration with Peshawar Press Club Cultural Committee at Peshawar Press Club paid glowing tributes to the late luminary. Prof Dr Mohammad Azam Azam resident director PAL while addressing on the occasion said that Qalandar Momand (1930-2003) contributed tremendously to Pashto language and literature adding that he not only changed the course of Pashto poetry and prose but also brought about a remarkable in practical literary criticism, research and fiction writing. Dr Azam maintained that Qalandar Momand introduced new ideas to Pashto and set new trends, as he was great master of diction. Majeedullah Khalil General Manager PTV, Peshawar Centre who presided over the function said that Qalandar Momand was revolutionary literary giant who brought about a qualitative c change both in substance and style of Pashto fiction and poetry. He observed that Qalandar had a vast knowledge and therefore, he not only contributed to Pashto and Urdu languages but also added much to the world literature as his short stories Gajrey had been translated in other major languages of world. Prof Dr Rajwali Shah Khattak in his remarks pointed out late Qal andar Momand was an encyclopedic figure and many shades of his personality had not been discovered yet, he said researchers should conduct substantive research on his literary and political contributions. Dr Zubair Hasrat in his research paper revealed that Qalandar Momand contributed immensely to Pashto journalism in addition to literary trends in poetry and prose and criticism. He said writers and poets should try to dig out hidden aspects of the late poet. Saleem Raz chairman world Pashto conference regretted that literary figures of high repute like Qalandar Momand were not given their due respect and status, he said many critics presented his works in a dubious manner. Raz maintained that Qalandar Momand’s message was for universal peace, brotherhood and unification of Pashtun nation. Saadaullah Jan Barq senior poet and columnist dilated upon his close associations with Qalandar Momand adding that the late poet used the power of his pen for the enlightenment of Pashtuns and gave them a new direction. Prof Dr Yar Mohammad Maghmoom Khattak said that some poets and writers had misunderstood Qalandar’s critical views even Hamza Baba was once skeptical of couplet of Qalandar Momand but the late writer had no literary rivalry with ghazal maestro and on many occasions had even explained his position. Rokhan Yousafzai, Abdul Wasood Ashnaghari, Shaukat Hussain Hasrat and a few others paid tribute to Qalandar Momand. Zalan Momand son the late poet while paying homage to his legendary father said that he (Qalandar Momand) had challenged the status quo, therefore, he earned widespread reaction as well as appreciation from his adversaries and fans. Prof Abaseen Yousafzai conducted the seminar in a befitting manner. Shamim Shahid president Press Club was present on the occasion.
